Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, continued the BottleRock festival fun with a sold out show at Jam Cellars Ballroom Sunday night. The BottleRock after dark series gave a lot of festival patrons a second chance to catch a favorite set twice and a lot of other folks the opportunity to catch must-see artists in an intimate setting.
The crowd seemed a little on edge for this show. Not sure why, but there seemed to be a lot of people that were arguing with each other around me. Lots of folks were not being aware of other people’s personal space or were just being flat out rude. Could have definitely the festival sun that got to everyone. Thankfully things seemed to settle a bit once St. Vincent came out.
Momma joined St. Vincent for a few shows and opened up and got the crowd ready for the night. They were defy band I had been wanting to catch and they were so great live. Lots of folks weren’t too familiar with them but I ended up getting asked by a few people what the name of their band was when they finished up their set.
St. Vincent took the stage with a dark, foggy stage intro. As soon as she took her place on stage, she entertained the audience by getting as close and personal as possible- at one point even caressing the faces of some of those in the audience as she sang to them. It was spine chilling having her look directly into my lens at times when she’d get close. At one point, Annie spit into the air as she untucked her blouse from her shorts and started to move around the stage very theatrically. The whole show was actually very theatrical with the way she performed. After playing new material from her latest album, All Born Screaming, she threw in some past hits before ending the show with some crowd surfing. The entire show was amazing and I’d definitely see her again. Theres something about how Annie Clark interacts with her fans at these shows that is so pure, it makes people want to come back for more.
