I never thought I would see Underoath tour again with all original members but alas – they’re back! Along with a guitar thrashing and head banging performance. The No Fix Tour hits St. Louis with a vengeance.
Veil Of Maya opened up the show with heavy djent and massive breakdowns to warm up the crowd. Dance Gavin Dance followed up and they really turned up the energy. Judging by the t-shirts in the crowd, it appeared as if there was an even split of Underoath and Dance Gavin Dance fans. The crowd even chanted for “one more song” for a solid two minutes after their set, but they did not return.
A common trend in metal shows is for the band to play a random song to walk out to. It can be anyone from Lil Jon, to Taylor Swift, to Weird Al Yankovic. Usually it’s to get a good laugh from the crowd and get them excited. Underoath continued this trend and walked out to the most iconic and controversial song out right now, “This is America” by Childish Gambino. I did not expect them to choose this song but I personally loved it and became even more excited for what was to come. Midway through the song, the band finally emerged and wasted no time to jump right into “On My Teeth”, from their latest album, “Erase Me”.
Underoath got a lot of push-back from their fans because the album isn’t as heavy previous records, and has a much more mature sound. Especially since it was their first album in 8 years with all original members. I thought the new album was decent but after seeing them perform it live, it made me like it even more. Most Underoath fans are in their late twenties, early thirties and were there for their old songs. Spencer Chamberlain, the lead vocalist, was aware of this and let the crowd know that they are going to play the classics, but to give their new material a chance.
The No Fix Tour has a solid line-up for new and old fans alike. Each band delivered a nostalgic performance but also showcasing new material. Be sure to catch them on their remaining dates:
