Last Wednesday, we celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of One Direction by checking out Alex Sampson’s performance at the Hudson Yards Summer Concert Series. The twenty-one year old Canadian pop star was a huge hit. His setlist of pop hits evoked teenage summer nostalgia for our favorite twenty-tens boy bands in a way that was unexpectedly incredible to witness.
Teenage super fans packed the barricade of the Wells Fargo stage, singing along to every lyric. Sampson has developed a fanbase that is completely in love with him, (close enough, welcome back 2014 Harry Styles) and his happy, easy-going stage presence seems to resonate with every single one of them. Superfan or not, it’s undeniable that Sampson’s ability to have fun onstage makes for a great show, especially when it’s set against a golden hour backdrop on a perfect summer evening.
