Fleet Foxes continued their massive Shore Tour with a date at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Amphitheater.
Fleet Foxes are touring in support of their critically acclaimed 2020 release Shore. This run of shows marks the band’s return to live shows since 2018 following the end of its world tour in support of the 2017 album Crack-Up. The live show features Robin Pecknold joined by Skyler Skjelset (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Casey Wescott (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Christian Wargo (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), and Morgan Henderson (multi-instrumentalist).
The crowd of mostly college students (we were on a campus, after all) and 20- to- 40-somethings was esctatic and very vocal. I’ve never been at a show where so many audience members felt as if they could enter a conversation with the musicians at any time. At several points, after bits of banter in the audience, frontman Robin Pecknold worked to keep the back of the venue in on the chatter by repeating laughlines and requests.
They shined especially on songs from their earlier albums, which fans frequently rose to their feet to sway along to. Highlights were “Your Protector,” a chill-inducing version of “White Winter Hymnal,” and “Mykonos.” Another special moment was a fan requested “Innocent Son,” which Pecknold played solo.
Newer tracks like “Can I Believe You” and “Featherweight” held their own too. Fleet Foxes music is timeless and blends together beautifully — it was hard to know which songs were from 2020 and which had been released almost a decade ago.
